WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE WORLD??? I know I’m not the only one to ask this question right now! Not only Climate Change, but a pandemic virus that could’ve come straight out of Pandora’s Box … Kate Foster

We’re experiencing some pretty strange and downright terrifying times and we’re all a little freaked out and preoccupied. No judgement from me. Who can blame us? But this new tool in our Climate Action site isn’t to discuss the state of things or the ongoing politics, because there’s enough debate and argument going on to raise the anxiety levels and put our brains in constant overload.

I believe we need to keep busy, proactive and positive. Easier said than done, of course; but social distancing needn’t be a time of constant stress or boredom either. This is the time to really show our kids that the little things count as much as the big things.

No matter your stance on climate change, we’re all capable of appreciating nature and wildlife a little more than many of us already do, and perhaps learning to respect the world around us from as young an age as possible might give kids the tools to make a difference in the long run.

Because if children don’t have the respect or appreciation for the wildlife they can see out their window and in their schoolyards, how do we expect them to care for the entire world?

That’s why I’ve come up with THE APPRECIATING NATURE STARTER KIT!

So, while you’re stuck at home over the next month or so, try a few of these simple things to connect your kids (and you!) with nature. And the best thing: you don’t need to ban screen time; you can incorporate it. WIN WIN!

  1. I agree, Sheryl. The Birds in Backyards is great – for everyone. I’ve actually recommended something similar on my blog this week – about observing minibeasts though, not birds – and have provided suggestions for what sorts of observations children can make. These are great suggestions by Kate. We are surrounded by nature and there is a lot to observe when we don’t take it for granted.
