Hope grows… by Cate Whittle
It is written in the trees,
the story of the fire,
their charred and broken bones
a silent, stark reminder.
The glow on the horizon,
the smoke that stings the eye,
the quiet, empty forest
the hanging question, why?
But in the soot and ashes
the leaves that spring alive,
the hardy forest grasses,
speak of how things will survive.
The burst of rain quenched green,
the little bud that shows,
the child who looks on hopeful,
knowing that hope grows.
It may take a year, a decade,
even longer,
but it is hope that reassures us
that nature will be stronger.

Hope grows … haiku by Pat Simmons
I take the first step.
The path may be difficult.
But I’m so hopeful.

The Trees Weep … haiku by Tania McCartney
The trees weep; no sound
Earth, wind, wood consumed by fire
Too quiet, this pain
Such loss raids the soul
Robs the breath and stuns the chest
But wait – what stirs?
A squint of green bud
Songs from the scorched canopy
New life born of hope

The Good Tree … by Robert Vescio
The good tree stands tall and majestic. Its story is part of the land and the people.
Tales of pain and suffering wrinkled in its bark.
But it lives on, rooted in its strength and knowledge, standing its ground to inspire.

Had taken
Everything I love
The flowers and the birds
And the clean air
Up above.
But then I looked
A little closer
And much to my surprise
I saw new leaves were opening
And heard the new chick’s cries.
And my heart soared with joy
As the buds opened
All around
And new shoots of grass
crept along the ground.
Hope rises
